Proplas International recently fitted a Vacon 37kW Drive to an Aoki 350 LL Injection Stretch Blow Machine at RPC Llantrisant. Prior to fitting the AC Drive, the Hydraulic power pack was controlled by a Star/Delta arrangement and consumed 28kW of Energy. Following the fitment of the AC Drive the Energy consumption fell to 20kW, an energy saving of approximately 28%.

On 18th June 2008, Proplas fitted a 30kW AC Drive to an Aoki 250. The drive was to replace an existing Somar PowerBoss, that was originally purchased to obtain energy savings. Before and after tests were carried out to verify the savings. All measurements were carried out over a half hour period, with a machine cycle time 20.2 seconds.

  • Energy used with PowerBoss = 21.5kW

  • Energy used with switching AC Drive to suit machine demand = 14.7kW

  • Energy used running drive at 50 Hz (simulating original star/delta arrangement) = 21.9kW
From the above data, it can be seen that the results obtained by fitting a Somar PowerBoss are negligible (0.5kW, a saving of 2.28%), whilst fitting an AC Drive and profiling it to meet the machine demands gives significant savings of 7.2kW (a saving of 32.8%).
